Breath, Blood & Urine Tests in Texas

When you are suspected to be driving while impaired by alcohol consumption, a law enforcement officer will most likely pull you over and ask you to submit to a breath, blood or urine test. The officer may also have you complete field sobriety tests, which are physical tests designed to show physical awareness and agility that is supposed to indicate sobriety or intoxication. Though you can refuse to take a breath, blood or urine test when requested to by an officer, it will result in an automatic license suspension. This suspension is up to twice the length of the suspension you would face if you had been convicted of DWI.

Breath tests are usually conducted using an Intoxilyzer machine. You blow into this device and it measures the amount of alcohol present in your lungs. A blood test will take a certain amount of your blood and measure the grams of alcohol present in your bloodstream. A urine test (which is a test that has been under debate as regards to accuracy) can also be conducted, measuring the amount of alcohol present in a certain measurement of the accused party’s urine.
