Would you really buy a car with a DWI prevention device?
A couple of friends have mentioned a local news story about future vehicles being manufactured with a DWI device that is similar to the interlock. This device would not allow a vehicle to be started if it detects alcohol emitting from a person's breath. While I realize that I may be biased because I practice DWI Defense in Houston, there are many other reasons most people would not want this type of device in the vehicle. If our legislature wants to outlaw drinking and driving they should just pass a law that makes it a crime to drink and drive. This would make more sense than adding another expense to the American consumer. Also, how do we know if the machine works properly? Most reputable interlock companies tell you that certain foods, medication, and mouthwash, will set off the machine. Does the public really want this type of hassle every day of their life? Are there going to be any criminal penalties for triggering the machine? How will the machine know who actually provided the sample containing alcohol? Will there be a penalty if the owner of the vehicle does not want the machine in their vehicle?
What happens in an emergency situation and the machine decides that the vehicle should not start? There are a lot of unanswered questions that need to be answered before the public should endorse this idea.
