DWI Cases Starting At....
I was in Las Vegas, Nevada this past weekend where I saw several billboards on the side of the road advertising for DWI/DUI arrest. I rarely come across any type of legal advertising in Houston much less billboard advertising that clearly states what the starting rates for a DWI case would be, therefore I was caught off guard when I saw them when I drove from Las Vegas to Boulder City. I would be uncomfortable stating a starting fee on a billboard. In fact, I do not know anyone else in town that does such a thing. The problem with stating that a case will cost X is that it is misleading. If I advertised that a DWI starts at X dollars a person would think that their case is worth that amount regardless of the level of a crime. Frankly, defending a DWI case does not cost the same across the board. Moreover, I would find it awkward having to to tell someone that despite publicizing that my cases start at X your case is going to cost Y. For example, a Felony DWI will not cost the same as a someone that has never been arrested for a DWI. Also, a case in Fort Bend, Montgomery County or a county further away from Harris County will cost more because of the travel time involved. Thus, I prefer to talk to any potential clients to find out several pertinent things concerning their case before quoting them a fee.
